Hypnotic Inductions

What is a hypnotic induction? This is the conscious vehicle for achieving a hypnotic state or trance.

There is a lot of misconception about induction. When talking with people some of them connect hypnosis with swinging a pocket watch in front of a person as well as other strange things that they have seen in the movies.

The hypnotic induction is the act of helping a person transition from a completely conscious state into a state where the subconscious is readily accessable. This is accomplished by taking the person into a physical and mental state of relaxation.

When one is in a hypnotic state, one is still aware of what is going on with them and around them. Sometimes after the first experience of hypnotic state a person will say something like “I was  not under hypnosis because I was aware of everything around me and could have gotten up at any time. I do feel very relaxed and refreshed though”. Unlike in the movies one can not be forced to do something that they believe is against their basic values.

The inductions that I and most other hypnotists use guides a person through various option choices that allows them to reach this relaxed peaceful state. Depending on what a person has chosen to accomplish through hypnosis, we may have to allow them to go even deeper into the relaxation state in order to access some long forgotten  or deeply buried memories or information. This can be accomplished in a number of different ways. Milton Erickson was a master of this and a constant teacher to many of us who enjoy studying his techniques.

Once in the appropriate level of hypnotic trance state, the real work of accomplishing the particular objective can be started. This can range from a few minutes to usually between thirty and ninety  minutes. Upon completion of the objective the client is helped to exit the hypnotic state feeling relaxed and refreshed.

There have been times when I have been working with another hypnotist where it is time for me to come back to total consciousness and I have said that “I don’t want to yet, I feel very comfortable where I am right now, thank you very much”.  Then I would return reluctantly to the full conscious state feeling great.

For those of you who have not consciously been taken into a hypnotic state and returned, think of it as a new tool that you are about to learn how to use for yourself and others.

The thing is that most of us have experienced a form of hypnosis with out even being aware of it. Think of some time when you were driving somewhere and then find yourself somewhere else than where you had intended. What happened? Your conscious state was directed somewhere else than driving so your subconscious took over and guided you to where ever you ended up, usually some other familiar place or going to it. This is sometimes referred to as operating on autopilot.

Hypnosis is an excellent tool, what do you want to do with it? How can it benefit you?
