Hypnosis and Surgery

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

A couple of months ago I had the occasion to get a slice in the back of my hand, went to my Doc and was sent to the ER to get it stitched up. Eight hours later I walked out with three stitches and a script for antibiotics. Four days later on a Monday I was to see my Doc so he could check the progress of healing. We found that the type of infection needed another type of antibiotic, so there was a prescription adjustment.

I was taking the antibiotics for the hand, and it healed up fine but my middle finger was swelling up and I was sent to a hand surgeon. After careful study he determined that the major infection was in the tendon sheath for the center finger on my right hand. Antibiotics can not penetrate tendon sheaths so the cure is to do surgery to open the finger and clean out the infection.

As I am getting ready for the surgery I go into my usual self hypnosis routine to aid in the success of the procedure and eliminate any residual pain along with promoting rapid healing. I was doing this right up to the time of going into surgery.

I saw my surgeon last Monday and he was amazed at how quickly and completely my healing was especially after the major problem that brought me to him. I could see that he looks like he is now opening up to the possibility (just a little) that hypnosis can be a very beneficial tool/aid to health and healing.

Hypnosis and Weight Loss

Read what Dr Sears has to say about Hypnosis and weight loss, really good.

Al Sears, MD

Dear Keith,

I’ll bet, at one time or another, losing weight has been on your list of New Year’s resolutions… Did you make it stick?

Losing weight – and keeping it off – is an obvious challenge. But there’s more to it than choosing the right foods. In many cases, the habits and daily routines causing your problem are much harder to recognize.

In my previous letters I’ve given you simple, easy-to-follow advice for burning fat fast. But here’s the bottom line: If you fall back into old patterns you’ll never make any progress.

If you have trouble breaking old habits, I have a solution I recommend to my patients - and I can tell you it works. I consistently get good results.

Studies show that the tried and tested technique of hypnosis is a surprisingly effective option for weight loss.

For instance:

  • Researchers divided 60 women on diets into two groups. One underwent hypnosis while the other just tried to “stick with it.” The hypnosis group lost an average of 17 pounds. The other group lost an average of only half of a pound.1
  • A “meta-analysis” looked at a number of studies to see if combining hypnosis with weight loss had a positive effect. It revealed that hypnosis increased weight loss by an average of 97%. More importantly, hypnosis helped people keep the weight off after dieting by a whopping 146%. In other words, it not only helps you lose weight—it helps you to stay slender long after you’ve stopped dieting.2

Those are impressive numbers… But many of my patients are skeptical when they first hear about medical hypnosis. I understand their quizzical looks when I bring up the idea, but it’s no longer a controversial technique. In fact, hypnosis is now “mainstream.”

The American Medical Association and the British Medical Association both endorse hypnosis as a proven technique for getting and staying healthy.

Even the prestigious Wall Street Journal published a piece a few years ago that said, “Numerous scientific studies have emerged in recent years showing that the hypnotized mind can exert a real and powerful effect on the body.”3

If you do a little poking around, you’ll see there’s an entire field of research and practice dedicated to finding new ways to use hypnosis to improve your health.

You can find a physician near you who’s familiar with medical hypnosis as a form of therapy. There are also books and CDs that will teach you how to do it on your own.

My favorite is the “hypno-therapy” diet plan called “Enjoying Weight Loss.”

This 8-session program was designed by the world’s leading hypnosis expert, Dr. Roberta Temes. She wrote the definitive text on the subject, The Idiot’s Guide to Hypnosis, and remains the leading authority on hypnosis and weight loss.

I highly recommend it. It works.

To Your Good Health,

Al Sears, MD

P.S.  – Here’s a good story from someone who’s tried the program:

“I am now down 20 pounds and still have not had any problems with stress eating (my lifetime habit is to overeat). I am also walking close to 5,000 steps per day now (a little over 2.5 miles) and into a size 16 from a 20/22 and people are finally beginning to notice. I personally thank you for your program even though I don’t understand how it works. I am starting to like who I see in the mirror.”

Build our bodies to excellent condition.

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

I have written about how hypnosis can help us operate our bodies and bring them to peak performance. This is very good, what if my body is not in the best of condition?

It serves each and every one of us to have our bodies in very good condition. Why? Because it is healthier for us. We are able to do more activities when we are in good health and condition. We don’t get winded on that long flight of stairs where there is no elevator, or possibly your golf game without a cart.

I have found a gentleman who can help just about any of us to get back into tip top shape without participating in and experiencing major cardio workouts. Mike Geary is a certified Nutritionist and a Certified Personal Trainer.  He knows what is appropriate to eat, and when as well as how to exercise to get the results that we desire. As I mentioned, he does not believe in extended cardio workouts. Mike finds superior results by using a form of interval training that he has developed over a number of years. This also fits in quite well with Dr. Al Sears MD, who I listen to closely, and his concepts of interval training and good healthy eating.

Since this connects so well for me I felt that I just have to let other people know about this gre3at opportunity for us to get healthy. I have a website posted that has Mike writing about his philosophy, he does it more eloquently that I can because I just started working with him and believe in his total approach with the one exception, and that being the use of Self Hypnosis to  get my subconscious on board for doing the actual action oriented program that Mike presents to each of us who want his help. Mike is not opposed to the hypnotic addition to ones getting healthy.

To read more by Mike, go to my awesome abs page and read what he believe gives us the best results for our bodies.

Pain Control with vipassana

Monday, March 9th, 2009

This is an article that I just received from Al Sears, MD.

As a doctor, he looks for natural, drug free forms of health healing. He also has a great program and philosophy for exercise and eating. Well worth signing up for his newsletter.

March 09, 2009

Dear Keith,The University of Iowa took brain scans on pain suffers and found results that were remarkable.1 They could actually see the parts of the brain that experience pain shutting down. How did they do it? They used a technique that will surprise you.The lead author of the study, an anesthesiologist, said he thinks this technique is approximately 65% - 70% effective against pain.A panel of experts at the National Institutes of Health said the same thing. They found that this technique can fight pain of all kinds.2 I’m not just talking about headaches. The research revealed that it can work for painful conditions from chronic illness to irritable bowel syndrome.Even mainstream media is on board. The Wall Street Journal said, “Numerous scientific studies have emerged in recent years showing that the [technique] can exert a real and powerful effect on the body.”3I have some good news: You can teach yourself this technique with the right guidance, in the comfort of your own home. It’s medical hypnosis. It’s a scientifically proven way you can beat pain – without the dangerous side effects of pain medications. Here’s just one example you can try at home. It’s based on an ancient form of breathing meditation from India called vipassana.

  1. Get yourself into a comfortable position. It can be sitting in your favorite chair, on the sofa, even lying down in bed.
  2. Make sure your environment is as quiet as possible. Turn off the TV or radio, have the kids go play outside—whatever it takes to create a peaceful, still atmosphere.
  3. Close your eyes and begin gently focusing your attention on your breathing. Breathe naturally, without trying to control it. Do this for about 5 minutes, so that your mind settles down a bit and your body feels relaxed.
  4. Gently let your attention rest on the source of your physical pain, keeping your eyes closed. With each breath, focus gentle awareness on the place where the pain happens.
  5. Now imagine breathing “into” that place. Allow your attention to rest in the area of the pain and breathe in with gentle awareness. You can even place your hand over the area.
  6. Imagine your pain responding to your breathing by “opening up” and slowly disappearing. Do this for 5 to 10 minutes, however long is most comfortable for you.
  7. Complete your meditation by bringing your awareness back to your breath for a minute or so and opening your eyes.

This is an effective way to change your experience of pain over time. You’re teaching your body to “relax” with the pain. This keeps it to a minimum. I know it sounds funny, but you’ll see real results if you stick to it.

I learned this technique from a medical hypnosis expert named Dr. Maggie Phillips. She has been training doctors all over the world for years on how to use your mind to reduce and control pain. She’s someone I’ve come to trust.

Dr. Phillips put together a four-CD course, Hypnosis: The Pain Solution, which I offer folks here at my Wellness Center. My patients tell me it really works. One 47-year-old man I’ll call Jose struggled for years with habit-forming pain medications. He said:

“Since adding Maggie Phillip’s guided hypnosis to my daily regimen, I’ve improved dramatically. I stopped using prescription drugs everyday. The amount I take now is almost down to zero.”

Aortic Anurism

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

A friend of mine recently was talking wit me about the less than great news that he had just received from his doctor. The Doc told him that he has an aortic anurism and it needed more tests before they go in to remove it.

I was telling him that if in fact they do have to go in that I can work with him so that to him it will be painless. He was liking that part, just does not really enjoy pain. He went in for more in depth testing and it turned out there was no anurism, just arteries that were accomidating too much plaque.

He was very happy that they are not going to crack his chest, and he still carries this reluctance to experience pain so eventually I will get to teach him how to do his own  personal pain control.

Allergies, Now what?

Friday, June 13th, 2008

I was watching the Dog Whisperer this evening and there was one particular commercial for allergy relief meds from big pharma. What I saw, was big drug companies pushing their philosophy of “If you feel something, take a pill from us to feel better”. My first reaction to the commercial was that the people should just get over it. Do something positive for yourself to feel better.

I then came into my office and looked at some email. There was a message from Al Sears MD. The title of his article is “Beat Allergies Naturally”. He then goes on to tell us that vitamin C, from lots of fruits and vegetables, Bromelain, from the root of the pineapple tree, and quercetin from many plants including apples, berries, broccoli, squash, and some nuts. All of these together are natures way of dealing with irritations naturally.

He then goes on to explain each of these sources and what they do to reduce/eliminate allergies. And all of the time I thought that I was using self hypnosis to deal with allergies. It appears that I have some help form eating a good diet of natural foods.

I believe in being an active participant in my own health and life. Eat good foods, exercise, do yoga and self hypnosis to help guide the body functions for good health, explore and enjoy life, have fun .

Be in health,

Keith

Hypnosis or Technology

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

I love hypnotics and I also work in the technology sector. I have an electrical contracting business for about 35 years. I have also worked at a couple of major high end companies with computers and chips and all.

In my electrical business is included satellite internet for those way out in the hills. The most recent one was somewhat challenging in that the fine tuning was extremely tedious and finally achieved.

Feeling good about that, I got home and my wireless network router of less than three months has decided to not work properly and I have been unable to reprogram it to function correctly.

Here is something that I can not use hypnotics to help correct. Electronics technology and hypnotics so far seem to me to be mutually exclusive.  To take care of me, it looks like I am going to have to return it and get another brand of router with real tech support.

Me, I believe in taking care of my health, and frustration over technology or anything else is not healthy. Therefore, if I can not repair it or reprogram it, then it gets replaced. To me that is the healthy way of approaching technology.

Personal Health

Monday, March 24th, 2008

I am not a big fan of drugs, by that I am referring to pharmaceutical drugs. Granted some of them are very beneficial for dealing with situations for short periods of time.

All of these drugs are not naturally occurring, if they were they could not be patented. The problem as I see it is that the majority of these drugs are prescribed for extended periods of time and therefore the side effects to them can build and be very unpleasant to the person taking them and in some cases cause addictions.

My preference  is to use alternative more natural solutions where appropriate. If someone is injured and in major pain, then pain killer meds are definitely in order for a period of time while the injury is being taken care of. Once the body in in the repair state, pain meds can be reduced and replaced with hypnotic pain control and then the pain meds can usually be eliminated.

I have had friends who died as a result of pain med addiction. It was not pretty.

On television we constantly see advertisements for the latest drug to loose weight, sleep well, get over anxieties, generally feel good. As the pitch for the drug is being made there is the disclaimer for side effects. The description to me is not appealing at all. I do not want to trade my situation for the side effects that they list as well as the other ones that they do not mention.

I want to feel good in my body therefore I choose to eat a healthy diet and add vitamin and mineral supplements to insure that my body has all the necessary building blocks to maintain the body in top condition.

Active use of the body is beneficial too, it is not necessary to go to the gym if you are not so inclined, though some kind of activity like walking the dog (you will both benefit), taking a scenic hike, swimming, riding a bicycle, most any kind of active use of the body will help maintain good muscle tone. Plus you will feel better as a result. Beats depression completely.

When we keep our bodies in good shape, then our mental state will have a better opportunity to be positive and we are more able to do fine tuning in this area. This allows us to help and serve those around us.
