A day with Betty Alice Erickson
Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008This past Saturday I had the great pleasure to attend “A Step After Healing” workshop put on by the Milton H. Erickson Institute of the Bay Area. This event took place at the San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, California, a very beautiful almost medieval setting. The stone archetecture complete with towers in the beautiful wooded setting was very soothing.
The Erickson Institute is operated by Eric Greenleaf Phd who actually did some studying with Milton before his death about thirty years ago. Eric is an excellent teacher who takes time to point out various subtleties within the framework of the hypnotic process and makes sure all present are aware of these subtleties and the reasons for them. Excellent teacher. Check him and the Institute at MiltonErickson.com
The main presenter/teacher was Betty Alice Erickson, the daughter of Milton Erickson, and herself a hypnotist, therapist and teacher. Betty Alice has her practice in Dallas, Texas.
Betty Alice worked as a subject for her father during his lectures, so she is very much aware of how he used his talents. Milton was a medical doctor and when he first started using hypnosis he had to develop very indirect methods of hypnosis because it was not legal for medical doctors to use hypnosis. He developed a masterful relationship with hypnosis in the indirect method. Milton also was instrumental in helping to get that restriction removed.
Betty Alice was able to tell us stories about how her father worked and demonstrate how the use of stories can be so very healing. She was very specific in letting us know that there is a large difference between therapy and healing. Therapy being something that is done to you by someone else and is left brain whereas healing is something that is done within ones own self by the self and is right brain and works through conection.
She talked about language, how the choice of words and grammer, sequencing and tonality are all part of the communication. “When imagination and intellect conflict, imagination usually wins”.
One of her premises of life that really spoke to me is “The highest purpose of relationships is that each person becomes wiser and better”. What a great idea! If all of us would follow that idea think how we could raise the healing energy in this world. Another, “Fear, real and imagined is one of the biggest handicaps people have”. “Humor and curiosity are powerful tools for productive changes”.
She talked about her fathers “Ten Rules of Life” and some of his philosophy. Here is part of his philosophy that touches me, “Healing ourselves is reconnecting the self to what we want to be, who we really want to be, how we want to be, what we respect and love about ourselves, with fearlessness and reverence for ourselves”. And the final one, ” Healing of one’s self never ends. It just gets better and easier”.
Betty Alice then discussed with us Naturalistic Trances. “The best way to create trance is to be in trance yourself with an air of pleased expectation the client will join you in such a nice comfortable place”.
Betty Alice gave a demonstration of hypnotic induction techniques, using the wrist hold levitation as an example and I got to be her demo subject. What an honor for me to get to work that closely with her.
Her eyes are beautiful and inviting, it is so easy to just go deep into them and gain the connection for the induction. We went through the various procedures she wanted to demonstrate and I found myself in a very comfortable, enjoyable trance state, aware of the outside world yet much enjoying where I was inside. When she suggested that it was time for me to return to the full conscious world my immediate reaction was “No, it is too comfortable here, thank you very much”, then I decided that it would be best for the demo to resurface so to speak.
As we were talking about the experience and I mentioned my reluctance to come back, she used that as a demonstration of how to suggest to the client to return. The class loved the whole demonstration. It turned out that a number of the different types of therapists, teachers and body workers present had not used hypnosis in their practices before, that this was their introduction into the wonderful world of hypnosis.
All in all it was a very memorable day for me.
Be healthy
Keith
